There are several signs that it is time to replace your lawn mower blade. A mower blade should be replaced every one to two years for safety and performance purposes. A sharp blade is essential for maintaining a healthy lawn. If you have already sharpened your blade twice and it is no longer cutting well or skipping spots, it is probably time to replace your blade. Dull blades tear the grass instead of cutting it. Over sharpening causes blades to become brittle and more susceptible to damage. If there is any damage including dents, gouges or pieces missing, it’s time to replace your blade. These damages are a major safety hazard.
The simplest solution for replacing your blade is to follow the instructions in your lawnmower owner’s manual. If you no longer have the owner’s manual, then you will need to measure your lawn mower blade. Be sure to wear safety gear for this job.
Measuring the length of a blade is like measuring a television or monitor screen. Measure the blade diagonally from cutting tip to cutting tip. For the most accurate measurement, measure across the back of the blade. If you do not measure it like this, it takes out several important components related to the blade- including the width of the blade.
Blade widths are measured at the widest part of the blade. This is often at or near the center hole.
The measurement for the center hole will depend on the type of hole being used. Measure round center holes for inner diameter. This is the most important hole on the blade. You can get close to finding the blade you need with the length and center hole measurements.
If the hole you are measuring is not round, you will need to take a different approach to measure this space correctly. If your blade has a star, you need to know how many points the star is (generally 4, 5, 6, or 7). If it is a rectangle, measure the length and the width.
Some blades will have an extra set of holes set to either side of the center hole. These outer holes can be measured two different ways. You can measure each outer hole’s diameter. You can also measure the distance between the outer holes. The correct way to measure the distance between outer holes is from the center of one hole to the center of the other hole.
With these measurements, you will have the best chance of making your purchase the correct blade for your mower. Check out our catalog of products for any blade replacements you need.
